Biographical entry

Zdzisław Czarny, nom de guerre “Pikuś”, b. 1927, ob. 1943, member of the platoon “Alicja” of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association (Związek Harcerstwa Polskiego, ZHP), codenamed the Grey Ranks (Szare Szeregi) during the German occupation. He lived on Rynek Podgórski in Kraków. On 14 November 1943, he was arrested by the Gestapo in a round-up in Kalwaryjska St, when he and his colleagues were on their way to play football on Krzemionki. Nine days later, his name appeared on a “death poster” with an annotation “[executed] for his membership in a Polish subversive organization and for supporting the terrorists”. According to Janina Potoczek, Zdzisław Czarny was executed by firing squad on 31 December 1943.
